Periodontal Disease (gum disease) Claims
Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is an infection or inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). If this goes untreated or there is a delay in the treatment or diagnosis, then this can be the cause of the periodontitis. One of the causes of periodontal disease (gum disease) to spread can be that a dentist has failed to diagnose periodontitis or the dentist has failed to refer the patient to a periodontist / dental hygienist, at the early stages. Due to this failure by the dentist, this can result in the periodontal disease spreading to the more advanced stages and which can cause irrevisible injury to the patient and the loss of teeth. Patients who have suffered from negligence by a dentist can look into making a periodontal claim for negligence against the dentist.

What is periodontitis?
Inflammation to the gums causes pockets to form between the gums and ligament and bones which fill with plaque and tartar and are sealed in by soft tissue swelling. As this inflammation spreads through the gums it begins to affects the ligaments and bones which support the teeth. Once this support to the teeth is lost then it is inevitable the individual will begin to suffer loose teeth then teeth loss. The destruction of the ligaments and bones is caused by the spread of the inflammation and as plaque contains bacteria the risk of infection and tooth abscesses will increase. As the risk of infection and tooth abscesses increases so does the rate of bone and ligament destruction within the mouth. The main cause of tooth loss within adults is due to Periodontitis. If a dentist fails to diagnose this condition early and it progresses to the advanced stages, then a claim for compensation against the dentist can be put forward by the patient.
Early stage of periodontal disease
The individual will feel inflammation of the gums which would stay for some considerable time. This causes pockets or crevices to form between the gum and teeth as the gums begin to move away from the teeth. These pockets or crevices then become filled with the plaque and tartar causing bone loss. The bone begins to deteriorate and becomes damaged and any infection at this stage of periodontitis is most likely to be painless and puss forming on the gums may also be visible. Regular checkups by a dentist at this stage can prevent the symptoms from spreading.
Moderate stage of periodontal disease
As infection becomes severe so does the damage to the gums and bones. The gums continue to recede away from the teeth as the infection increases intensity causing bone damage. Teeth begin to come loose and gaps may begin to appear between teeth due to this.
Advance stages of periodontal disease
At this stage the bone loss will be severe and very likely the individual will be affected by abscesses. The infection will increase in intensity and become very painful for individual. As teeth become loose it will inevitably lead to loss of teeth. Advanced gum disease (Periodontitis) is one of the main the main cause of tooth loss in adults.
Treatment of periodontal disease
The initial treatment to avoid periodontitis (periodontal disease) begins with constant home care by the individual. Brushing of teeth twice a day and flossing will help to decrease the chances of plaque and tartar penetrating. The treatment of antibiotic for periodontitis will relieve the individual’s symptoms temporarily. Recently conservative procedures such as root planning and scaling were introduced as a form of non-surgical therapy. The two procedures allow for natural healing and are documented as an effective treatment to control infections. In cases of advanced periodontitis where the damage to gum and bones is severe and the conservative treatments fails then it is likely that surgery will be required. The surgery would consist of the damaged areas (gum and bones) reshaped and the pockets of plaque and tartar thus eliminated.
Can I make a compensation claim for Periodontitis (periodontal disease)?
Periodontal disease spreads over a period of time. If the individual has a history of regular checkups by a dentist and dentist has failed to pick up periodontal disease until it was too late to cure, then the dentist may be held responsible for the disease spreading. What this would mean is the individual has been visiting the dentist regularly for a number of years and the dentist has either misdiagnosed or ignored the symptoms, until the symptoms entered the advanced stages. Due to the dentists neglect the periodontal disease has spread into the advanced stages and the individual would suffer severe consequences, such as the extraction of teeth (which could have been avoided had the dentist correctly diagnosed the symptoms earlier).
